Caption: | Ringedals Dam in Skjeggedal, 465m above Tyssedal, Hordaland, Norway. Itimpounds water for the hydroelectric power station which produces power for the heavy industry in Tyssedal. Note water being sprayed on to the concrete on the dam; possibly to cool the surface, which would heat in the sun whereas the core of the dam would still be very cold from the effects of winter, and thus help to reduce differential thermal expansion of the concrete. Industry started in Tyssedal, "Trolldalen", in 1906, the original power station, having a 180m long turbine hall and being fed with a 410m head of water, was the largest high pressure hydroelectric power station in northern Europe. It is now a museum. |
