LG 0056 Unique carved wooden panels dating from 1100, Urness Stavkirke, Urness, Lustrafjord (an arm of Sognefjord), Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. Dating from 1130 Urness Stavkirke is Norways oldest stavkirke, though these panels on its north facade are from an even old church from 1100. The sinuous style of design incorporating floral and animal motifs is known as the Urnes style and influenced Celtic design. A excellent example can be seen on a stone sarcophagus at Cashel in Eire (search using:- "LGPL Cashel"). The carving represents Good (the lion, which looks very dog-like as those who executed the work had no idea what a lion looked like) defeating Evil (the serpent).
